For the first time in Australia, gold was found in the middle of the nineteenth century, in 1851. The richest deposit was located not far from Melbourne. During the whole period of gold mining in these parts for a total of six hundred and fifty were produced tons of gold. But it did not last long, and in 1918 the last mine was. After that, dozens of towns turned into ghost towns, and the people left them. The largest city of Ballarat was considered, and that it was destined to come to life again in the late twentieth century, in 1970. Revived the wonderful city people who decided to make this place the country’s largest park museum, called Sovereign Hill.
Sovereign Hill is not like an ordinary museum, this is a real city of gold miners. Caught in this wonderful place, as if transported visitors back in time and are in the middle of the nineteenth century. At Sovereign Hill live and work over three hundred people, some of whom are men, women and even children. Their life goes on exactly as it was over a hundred years ago. The only thing they do not do, it is dig gold, but tourists can always try their luck and try to wash out gold in the local river.
At Sovereign Hill you can see how to make candles, dishes, pots, furniture and more. All this is made right in front of visitors, and is sold in local shops. Surprisingly, even manufacturing techniques are ancient. The town has its own theater, bank, school, printing, e-mail. This is a real city with real people and their hotel, which can stop anyone. The hotel and all of its internal situation complement the overall picture of the ancient city of gold.
